Geography & Climate

Malaysia is on the Malay Peninsula in southeast Asia also including Sabah and Sarawak on the island of Borneo. Most of Malaysia is covered by forest, with a mountain range running the length of the peninsula along with national parks and tropical islands.

Malaysia experiences tropical weather year-round with temperatures ranging from 21ºC (70ºF) to 32ºC (90ºF). The ideal time to visit most of the region is between March and early October, when you will avoid the worst of the rains and where humidity is less present. Despite the rains, the months of January and February can also be rewarding, and include a number of significant festivals, notably Chinese New Year and the Hindu celebration of Thaipusam.

Clothing

As the area is hot and humid, lightweight clothes in natural fiber (linen, silk or cotton) will be more comfortable. More light colored T-Shirts (deflect the heat) are recommended instead of the dark colored ones that absorb heat. We also recommend you to pack a light raincoat in case of any rainfall. If you plan on visiting religious sites please do cover up - absolutely no revealing clothes, and your legs & shoulders should be coverred.

Population & Language info

To date, the total population in Malaysia has reached 30 million. The main ethnic groups within Malaysia comprise the Malays, Chinese and Indians, with many other ethnic groups represented in smaller numbers, each with its own languages.

The indigenous languages of Malaysia belong to the Mon-Khmer and Malayo-Polynesian families. The national, or official, language is Malay which is the mother tongue of the majority Malay ethnic group.

Most countries are exempt of Visa for a stay of maximum 90 days. However we advise you to visit the Immigration Portal of Malaysia several weeks before arriving in order to make sure your passport respects all requirements.

The government hospitals have the country's best healthcare equipment and facilities apart from having specialists in the field. Private hospitals are mostly located at urban areas and are equipped with the latest diagnostic and imaging facilities. Money

The monetary unit of the country is Ringgit Malaysia and is written as RM or MYR. Foreign currencies can be exchanged at banks and licensed money changers. International credit cards are widely accepted in department stores, major hotels, up-market shops and restaurant.

Tipping is not common in Malaysia, especially in the more rural areas. In most hotels and large restaurants, a 10% service charge is added to the bill along with 6% government tax. For tours and sightseeing we recommend some tip for the driver and guide, depending on the quality of the service. Porters and bellboys are usually tipped depending on the weight and size of the bags.

Special Customs

Meeting and Greeting: Do not offer to shake hands unless you know that your acquaintances are fairly westernized. Even then, let them offer to shake hands first and never shake hands with a woman unless they offer to do so first. The traditional greeting or salam resembles a handshake with both hands but without the grasp.

Malaysia is a predominantly Muslim country and visitors should dress respectfully, particularly in rural areas. Wearing trousers or a long skirt, not shorts, and covering the shoulders is recommended but not essential.
