Geography & Climate

Indonesia is an archipelagic country located in Southeast Asia, lying between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. It is located in a strategic location astride or along major sea lanes connecting East Asia, South Asia and Oceania. It is the world's largest island country. Being a tropical country, Indonesia does not have spring, summer, autumn, or winter, instead of just the two seasons of Rainy and Dry, both of which are relative. While there is significant regional variation, in most of the country (including Java and Bali) the dry season is April to October, while the wet season is November to March. However, global warming has made the seasons less predictable.

Indonesia can be marked as the dawn of mankind since it is where the remains of the early man were unearthed. During the ancient age of kingdoms and empires, Indonesia saw the rise of the great empires that ruled over almost all of South-East Asia and regarded to play a key role in the history of the region. After gaining independence from foreign colonization and the wave of both World Wars, Indonesia emerged as one united country and continued to thrive amongst the top nations of the world to this very day.

Bahasa Indonesia is the national and official language of Indonesia and is used in the entire country. It is the language of official communication, taught in schools and used for broadcast in electronic and digital media. Most Indonesians also have their own ethnic language and dialect, with the most widely spoken being Javanese and Sundanese. Some ethnic Chinese communities continue to speak various Chinese dialects, most notably Hokkien in Medan and Teochew in Pontianak.

Traveling Info

Foreigners nationals from countries which are included in the 169 Visa-Free Country List are entitled for visa exemption, may enter Indonesia from 124 immigration checkpoints and granted a 30 days stay that cannot be extended. Mandatory requirements includes : passport with minimum 6 months validity and return / through tickets. Foreigners can apply for this visa upon arrival in Indonesia, if their nationality is included on visa-on-arrival 68 countries list. A holder of Visit Visa on Arrival is given 30 days stay and can be extended. Immigration Office for 1 (one) time, in order to have another 30 days stay. Mandatory requirements includes : passport with minimum 6 months validity and return/through tickets.

Medical information

There are no essential vaccines for entry to Indonesia from Western Europe. However for your personal protection travellers are recommended to consider vaccination cover against a number of diseases.

Money

The local currency in Indonesia is the Indonesian Rupee. Foreign Exchange can be brought in without limit. Large amounts many need to be declared on arrival and a certificate issued against this to facilitate easy reconversion on departure. Tourists are warned that changing money through unauthorized persons is not only illegal but also involves the risk of receiving counterfeit currency. There are 24-hour exchange facilities available at all big cites and international airports.

Visitors are not to be expected to tip taxi drivers. However, hotel, airport and train station porters should be tipped approximately Rs20/bag. If a service charge is not included, tip guides Rs 500 and drivers approximately Rs300 per day or 10 percent where appropriate. In restaurants, if the service was good, tip anything between approx 5-10 % of the bill.
